Le Loop - supporting the William Wates Memorial Trust

Le Loop follows the official route of the Tour de France, one week ahead of the professionals and finishes 21 stages later in Paris

On Friday 26th June 2026 around 100 riders will gather in Barcelona for the 'Grand Depart'. Some cycle a few days, some ride further and others will dip in and out over the following 3 weeks of the tour. I'm aiming to do the whole thing.

All monies raised go directly to the William Wates Memorial Trust whose mission is to help the most disadvantaged young people keep away from a life of crime and violence and fulfil their potential. This is achieved by giving grants to charities that engage young people through the medium of sports, arts and education.

100% of funds raised go to the charity -donations do not pay for my Tour

It's been a tough couple of years for charities and particularly for young people. This is my chance to give something back and help support young people who aren't lucky enough to enjoy the advantages in life that most of us take for granted.

Le Loop is no small undertaking. Putting in the hard yards training beforehand and then riding the whole thing is going to hurt! Please incentivise me not to cop and reward the pain by giving generously.

Merci bien!

The pain in Spain

Tuesday 24th Mar
Last week the rain wasn’t behaving as advertised because it was falling all over Alicante, never mind the plain, where I ventured for a few days warm weather training. In fact it wasn’t even warm and it was pretty windy too. On the upside what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, though riding up the Balcon de Alicante was complete murder.

If I needed reminding, the trip told me how much training I've got to do and even if I do that how hard Le Loop is going to be anyway. The distances we were doing, and which I was spent after, were around 100km and 2000m of ascent per day, which is about half the daily average of the Tour. And my botty is sore after 4 days, what hope after 21?

A massive thanks to the Spanish Baarbierians who invited me along with them. A nicer bunch you couldn’t meet.

Upping the target

Monday 16th Mar
Having set a target of £5k to raise, that has been reached today thanks to the r amazing generosity of friends and family. Happily most of the family are friends too!

Since the target was achieved within two weeks of launch and there are three months to go, it seems worthwhile to up the target.

£10,000 here we come.

One week in

Sunday 15th Mar
Why anyone would be interested in a blog from me is a complete mystery but I'm told it will help with the fundraising so it would be churlish not to give it a go.

To fundraising effort. I spammed everyone last week and have had an amazing response from friends, family and work colleagues. Thank you thank you to everyone who has dipped into their pocket as well as to those who intend to but just haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm achingly close to the initial target I set of £5k and suspect that like Mondo Duplantis I'll be raising the bar before long so please keep it coming.

Two other recent events. My training for Le Loop has started and I covered 195km which is about as much as we'll be doing in a single day on the tour itself. Secondly I became a grandfather for the first time which serves to remind this old man why I need to do the training! I'm not going to upload a photo of the baby but he's cute so doesn't take after this grandpa.

And so it begins ....

Thursday 5th Mar
I can't put it off any longer: yesterday I started my training. A paltry 24 miles with about 300m of ascent in a god awful 1hr25m, with cramp thrown in for good measure after just 12 miles. I'd like to think it can only get better but with the Queen Stage of Le Loop only 137 days away I'm not sure how true that is.

Whilst the training started yesterday the prep began a while ago. What bloke doesn't like the excuse to buy some new kit in the forlorn hope it will make him do better and bring bragging rights.  I'm guilty as charged with Le Loop providing the perfect excuse for a new bike. I've just taken delivery from a local Hampshire bike manufacturer Handsling. Check them out. Great bikes, very reasonably priced and excellent customer service facilitating all sorts of customisation. And no, I'm not on commission. Whether it will be money well spent will entirely depend on how I fare relative to fellow Looper Ed who cajoled me into this in the first place and left me for dust the last time we went on a training ride.
