Le Loop - supporting the William Wates Memorial Trust

Le Loop follows the official route of the Tour de France, one week ahead of the professionals in July 2025

I'm riding the 'Mountains Week' - 6 stages taking in the Pyrenees, Provence and the Alps.  Big ticket climbs include Col du Tourmalet, Mont Ventoux, Courchevel and La Plagne.

The William Wates Memorial Trust is a charity set up in 1998 in memory of Will Wates by his family after he was tragically killed while on his gap year.  It is a grant-giving Trust which aims to support disadvantaged young people via art, sport and education to keep them away from a life of crime and violence.  Some of their stories can be read here.

These are young people whose lives can be changed, with your help.

Every £ that you donate goes straight to helping others – the charity has no paid staff and I’ll be covering all the costs of the Mountains Week.

Merci beaucoup !!

Training Blog

Monday 19th May
My training has stepped up in March & April, as can be seen in the little table below.  Quite a lot of climbing in the local hills and on events like Tour de Manc, which I did a couple of weeks ago, together with various other solo & group rides.
Have just come back from a weekend in Yorkshire with Nic, where she is in training for her epic 2-week Offa's Dyke walk in July, while I'm out doing the TdF.  I got 2 solid days in on the bike, with the second day stronger than the first, which is a bit of a relief. I'd back myself for one big day in the mountains but it's the 6 days on the bounce that's worrying me !
Weather has been unbelievably good for the last few weeks, meaning less time on the hamster wheel in the garage and more time outside, which is great.  However the uber-dry weather has brought some issues as you can see in the picture below that I took on the Cat & Fiddle a couple of weeks back ...
My (standard for a cyclist) obsession about weight as I approach a big event is graphed below; steady progress since February with a couple of bumps in the road - Nik Walton-Holland's birthday party in April which went on until 5am, then a work trip to Maastricht which is always a complete food & drink blow-out !!
Group ride-out coming up next Sunday with some of the other North West-based riders doing Le Loop (this amateur TdF event), so we'll see who has been eating all the pies ...

Steady progress with some lapses !

We are both very proud of your effort. We thought that it would be less expensive to donate than to meet your post-ride bar bill!!
